To date, opening ceremonies for the first twelve facilities – including preschool educational organizations, family polyclinics, and Mahalla Household Services centers – have been held in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, and Bukhara regions.
This project is being carried out based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on September 18, 2021, PD-5246 “On measures for the implementation of the Sustainable Rural Development Project with the participation of the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC International Development Fund”. Under this initiative, a total of 939 facilities across 20 districts are planned for construction, reconstruction, and entire construction.
A key aspect of the project is its community-driven approach – social and infrastructure facilities were selected based on direct input from local residents, ensuring that developments align with the needs and specific characteristics of each mahalla.
In particular, the 3-storey Mahalla Household Services centers to be built under the project are designed to provide various services to the population. The building will house a beauty salon, barber shop, pharmacy, special rooms for bank representatives, youth training centers, and service rooms for the Chairman of the Mahalla Citizens’ Assembly, Khokim’s assistant, women activist, youth leader, and prevention inspector. A sewing shop, home appliance confectionery shops, and a department store also will provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
In addition to being a one-stop shop for the rural population, such centers also play an important role in promoting entrepreneurship and crafts, increasing employment, and boosting the local economy.
Currently, more than 100 new construction sub-projects in remote areas are in their initial phase. By the end of the second quarter of this year, construction is expected to commence on all remaining facilities, including those undergoing major repairs and reconstruction.
The Sustainable Rural Development Project aims to achieve comprehensive regional development by enhancing transportation infrastructure, engineering and communication networks, and social amenities, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents across Uzbekistan’s rural communities.
