Every year on June 5, the global community celebrates World Environment Day. This occasion serves as an important reminder that human well-being and economic development are closely interconnected with the state of the natural environment.
Today, protecting nature has become not only an environmental responsibility but also a critical economic priority. Clean air, high-quality water, fertile land, and rich biodiversity are fundamental to agriculture, industry, tourism, and public health. Damage to the environment inevitably results in substantial economic losses in the future. Therefore, every investment directed toward environmental protection is, in essence, an investment in the future development of the country.
As is well known, 2025 has been declared the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy” in Uzbekistan.
This once again confirms that environmental security and economic development are inseparable concepts.
In our country, projects worth billions of soums have been implemented to protect the environment, restore the Aral Sea region, expand green spaces, and adapt to climate change.
On June 4 of this year, during the 8th Plenary Session of the Assembly of the Global Environment Facility held in Samarkand, the Head of State emphasized that humanity is currently facing serious environmental threats, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. The President noted that New Uzbekistan views ecological transformation as a new model of development and is implementing five national projects aimed at protecting air quality, preserving biodiversity, improving waste management, expanding greening initiatives, and promoting environmental education and culture.
In addition, important objectives were outlined, including expanding protected natural areas to 21 percent of the country’s territory by 2030, reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere, developing energy production through waste recycling, and increasing environmental literacy among young people.
World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, reminds each of us of an important truth: environmental sustainability is a fundamental prerequisite for economic development. According to estimates by the World Bank and other international organizations, climate change and the depletion of natural resources could cause economic losses amounting to billions of dollars in the coming decades. Conversely, investments in the green economy create new jobs, improve energy efficiency, and promote the rational use of resources, thereby ensuring sustainable economic growth.
Protecting water resources, preserving soil fertility, developing renewable energy sources, and implementing greening projects strengthen the country’s long-term competitiveness. Today, every investment in environmental protection serves as a solid foundation for future economic stability, public well-being, and national development.
Protecting nature is not merely an environmental obligation—it is one of the most effective investments in the economic future of Uzbekistan.
