As is known, agriculture is the main economic sector of the country. It accounts for about 30 percent of GDP, employs more than 30 percent of the total population, and contributes to poverty reduction. To date, more than 20 million hectares of land, including 3.2 million hectares of irrigated arable land, are used to grow food for the needs of the population and raw materials necessary for the economy.
Ensuring the stability of this sector and monitoring the efficient use of every inch of land using modern information programs and space technologies are among the most important tasks in this regard. For this purpose, an agreement on cooperation was signed between the Space Research and Technologies Agency Uzcosmos and the Inspection for Supervision of the Agro-Industrial Complex "Uzagroinspeksiya".
According to it, the parties agreed to work together in a number of areas, including continuous monitoring of the current state of agricultural land use, monitoring cotton, wheat and other crops using artificial intelligence capabilities, and determining the actual area of crops.
It should be noted that Uzcosmos has been contributing to increasing efficiency in the agricultural sector for several years through the State Space Monitoring System. In particular, so far, as a result of processing satellite images, the agency has identified 967 thousand hectares of wheat and 597 thousand hectares of cotton in Fergana, Andijan, Namangan, Tashkent, Jizzakh, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, and Kashkadarya regions.
In addition, in order to control the effective use of fertile land, it was noted that there are 56 thousand 521 hectares of unused arable land in the above-mentioned 8 regions. It is important to note that during the monitoring, 27,266 cases of misuse of 86,107 hectares of reserve lands were also identified in 8 regions.
The memorandum of cooperation signed between Uzcosmos and Uzagroinspeksiya is of great importance in remotely monitoring the condition of agricultural lands, assessing their fertility, accurately monitoring arable land, identifying illegally and arbitrarily occupied land areas, and thereby creating transparent mechanisms for rational use of resources in the agricultural sector, increasing productivity, and controlling and managing land.
