Today, various interpretations of the Samarkand-2028 mission have been circulating on social media. In particular, some sources have described the project as "Uzbekistan's first satellite launch."
It is important to clarify that Samarkand-2028 is not Uzbekistan's national satellite. It is a hyperspectral Earth observation satellite developed by the Chinese company STAR.VISION and implemented in cooperation with the Uzbekcosmos Agency.
The most significant and historic aspect of this mission is that, for the first time in the history of STAR.VISION's international projects, an artificial intelligence module developed by engineers of the Uzbekcosmos Agency was integrated into the satellite's onboard system.
This is far more than conventional software. The AI module processes images and data collected by the satellite directly in orbit before they are transmitted to Earth. As a result, the volume of transmitted data is significantly reduced, critical information becomes available more quickly, and the efficiency of subsequent data analysis is substantially improved.
In this regard, Uzbekistan participated in the project not merely as a data user or observer, but as a strategic partner that developed one of the mission's key technological solutions. This demonstrates the international recognition of the expertise and capabilities of Uzbek engineers.
The name "Samarkand-2028" carries symbolic significance. In 2025, during the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, the city of Samarkand was elected, at the initiative of the Uzbekcosmos Agency, to host the 79th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in 2028. This historic achievement marked a major milestone not only for Uzbekistan but for the entire Central Asian region. For this reason, the satellite was named "Samarkand-2028."
Samarkand-2028 is a major international space project between Uzbekistan and China, in which an artificial intelligence module developed by Uzbek engineers was deployed for the first time in an international satellite mission.
This marks an important milestone in the development of Uzbekistan's space industry. For the first time, the country has participated in an international space project as a developer of a high-tech solution. The experience gained through this mission will provide a strong scientific and engineering foundation for future national satellite programs, including the Mirzo Ulugbek scientific satellite project currently being developed by Uzbek engineers.
