In recent years, Uzbekistan has been actively developing international integration and legal diplomacy in the space sector. One of the most important steps in this direction was the first time that Uzcosmos represented our country's interests at the 65th session of the Legal Subcommittee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), held in Vienna, Austria.
This participation is part of the roadmap for the development of the space industry for 2024–2026, approved by Decree No. UP-155 of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated October 14, 2024. This has elevated the country to a new level in space diplomacy and the international system of space law.
The 65th session of COPUOS discussed international legal issues governing space activities. Specifically, the discussion focused on regulating the industry based on international norms, implementing UN space treaties, liability for space objects, and aligning national legislation with international standards.
During the session, the Uzbek delegation presented its public policy and reforms in the space sector. Highlighted were areas such as defining the space industry as a priority area of state policy, improving the regulatory framework, integrating space technologies into the economy, and expanding international cooperation.
Information was also provided on preparations for the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), scheduled to be held in 2028 in Samarkand. This initiative has received high praise from the international community.
The participation of the Uzbek delegation in the 65th session of COPUOS was of strategic importance. It allowed the country to engage in international discussions on space law, elevate its national space policy to the global level, and provide the opportunity to refine the legal framework based on international experience.
