On March 30, 2026, Tashkent hosted the Fifth Meeting of Heads of Space Agencies and Authorized Bodies of the Member and Observer States of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). The meeting was held as part of “Space Technology Conference 2026” and focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation in the field of space technologies.
With the global space economy already exceeding USD 500 billion and projected to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030, the development of space technologies is becoming increasingly strategic for OTS countries. Collectively, the member states represent a population of over 170 million people and a vast geographical area, creating significant market potential and broad opportunities for the development of space-based services, particularly in Earth observation, communications, and navigation.
The meeting brought together heads of the space sector from Uzbekistan, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as representatives of observer states — Hungary and Turkmenistan — and international partner organizations. Participants reviewed key achievements of recent years and discussed priority areas for future cooperation.
Particular attention was given to a joint initiative under the OTS framework — the development of a technological satellite. The project aims to facilitate technology transfer among member states, consolidate research and innovation capacities, and support the training of young professionals.
In addition, the agenda included several priority areas, including:
• expanding the use of Earth observation data in agriculture, water resource management, and environmental monitoring;
• applying space technologies for early detection of emergencies and mitigation of their impact;
• developing analytical platforms based on geographic information systems (GIS) and big data;
• increasing private sector participation in the space industry;
• strengthening human capital development and launching joint educational programs.
In recent years, OTS countries have achieved notable progress in the space sector. Türkiye and Kazakhstan have successfully launched Earth observation satellites, Azerbaijan provides international services through its telecommunications satellites, while Uzbekistan is actively applying space-based monitoring for land and water resource management, as well as in environmental protection, geology, and agriculture.
The Fifth Meeting marks an important step toward coordinating space policy within the OTS, developing shared infrastructure, and advancing a regional space ecosystem. It serves not only as a platform for policy dialogue but also as an effective mechanism for initiating and implementing practical cooperation projects.
The event, held in Tashkent, contributes to strengthening Uzbekistan’s international standing in the space sector, advancing its innovation-driven development agenda, and positioning the country as a regional technology hub.
