International Cooperation for Environmental Safety: Meeting between Uzbekistan and the BRS Secretariat

During the meeting, the parties comprehensively discussed the expansion of cooperation within the framework of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, as well as collaboration in the areas of chemical safety, hazardous waste management, sustainable development, and scientific research.
Minister Kungiratboy Sharipov provided information on the institutional and legal reforms implemented in recent years in Uzbekistan in the fields of environmental protection, environmental safety, and sustainable waste management. In particular, he emphasized the ongoing improvement of national legislation to fulfill international environmental convention obligations and the strengthening of interagency coordination mechanisms.
Additionally, information was presented regarding the development of human resources in environmental fields within the higher education and science system, support for scientific research, and the transformation of universities into research-oriented institutions. Educational programs in ecology, chemical technologies, environmental engineering, and industrial safety are currently being modernized.
For his part, Mr. Rolph Payet expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with Uzbekistan and highlighted the BRS Secretariat’s capacity to provide technical assistance, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support scientific and practical initiatives.
At the conclusion of the meeting, agreements were reached to further strengthen scientific capacity within the framework of the conventions, expand cooperation between universities and international organizations, and implement joint projects in the field of environmentally sustainable development.
