From November 12 to 15, 2024, Dubai (UAE) hosted the 21st annual Plenary Meeting of the Kimberley Process, which saw the participation of a delegation from Uzbekistan, representing the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade, the State Assay Office under the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the "Uzbekzargarsanoati" Association.
During the Plenary Session, Uzbekistan’s application to join the Kimberley Process was officially approved, granting the country full membership status.
A key factor in the approval decision was an expert mission’s visit to Uzbekistan in October, comprising representatives from Kimberley Process member countries and observers from the World Diamond Council. Based on the visit's results, the experts commended the country for its adherence to the minimum requirements of the Kimberley Process.
This move follows Presidential Decree No. DP-104 “On Measures for the Further Development and Competitiveness of the Jewelry Manufacturing Sector,” signed on July 23, 2024, which sets forth Uzbekistan’s pathway to joining the Kimberley Process.
For reference: The Kimberley Process is an international intergovernmental initiative primarily aimed at preventing the entry of illegally mined, so-called "blood" or "conflict" diamonds into the global market. This initiative seeks to prevent the use of proceeds from such diamonds to finance regional conflicts and international terrorist groups.
Joining the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme will further support national jewelry industry producers, secure their rights in the international market by providing access to the global diamond market, establish international cooperation based on widely recognized international standards, enhance Uzbekistan's image on the global stage, facilitate the exchange of advanced foreign experience, attract modern technologies and foreign investment, and boost the country's economic potential.
