Today, an international forum dedicated to food security opened in Shanghai, China. The event is organized within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative and is considered one of the world’s largest platforms for international cooperation.
The main goal of the forum is to strengthen trade and economic ties between countries, develop infrastructure, and promote people-to-people interaction.
The forum is attended by representatives from Uzbekistan, China, Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brunei, Cambodia, South Africa, Yemen, and other countries.
For Uzbekistan, the “Belt and Road” initiative has strategic importance. Recently, during the regular meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State, two important protocols were signed on the export of almonds and melons. As a result, the number of products authorized for export to China on the basis of phytosanitary certificates has increased to 27. In the near future, it is also planned to obtain export permits for dried cherries and beets.
Dried products are in high demand on the global market and provide significant added value. This contributes not only to increasing export volumes but also to creating new jobs and raising household incomes.
At the opening ceremony, Ibrohim Ergashev, Director of the Agency for Plant Quarantine and Protection, delivered a speech in which he highlighted the results of the work carried out under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to develop agriculture and promote Uzbek products in global markets.
Digital technologies are being actively introduced into Uzbekistan’s export and import processes. In particular, work is underway to connect to the electronic phytosanitary certification system (E-Phyto IPPC) with China. This will reduce border barriers, simplify trade procedures, and make the export system more transparent.
These developments contribute to strengthening food security and ensuring the stability of international trade not only in Uzbekistan but also throughout the Central Asian region. Uzbekistan’s active participation in international forums once again demonstrates the country’s commitment to the principles of openness and cooperation in foreign policy.
The event will conclude with the adoption of the “Shanghai Declaration,” which will outline key areas of cooperation aimed at ensuring food security, implementing digital technologies, and facilitating cross-border trade.
