Today, October 19, a three-day international seminar on intellectual property commercialization and technology startup development opened at the Agency for Innovative Development. The seminar is organized jointly by the Agency for Innovative Development and the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, with the participation of experts from the U.S. Department of Commerce and Cornell University.
The main objective of the event is to equip Uzbek scientists, inventors, and technology startup representatives with practical knowledge and skills in the legal protection of scientific developments and intellectual property assets, assessment of their commercial potential, and bringing them to market.
On the first day, participants are being introduced to international best practices in managing technology transfer offices, developing startups, and operating business incubators. Discussions also cover the protection of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, as well as patent searches and the development of international patenting strategies.
Particular attention is also being paid to bringing technological developments to market, promoting innovative products, attracting the resources and investment needed by startups, conducting negotiations with U.S. companies, and exploring licensing opportunities.
Another key feature of the seminar is its focus on providing individualized support to local technology startups. On October 20–21, individual consultation and coaching sessions are scheduled for up to 20 local technology startups that already hold, or are developing, intellectual property assets with commercial potential. These sessions will consider the specific characteristics of each project, including intellectual property protection mechanisms, commercialization pathways, and opportunities for cooperation with U.S. partners.
The program features Cornell University experts Richard Cahoon and Louis Walcer, as well as James Filpi, Senior Counsel at CLDP. They are sharing their expertise in technology transfer, licensing, the establishment of innovative enterprises, and bringing scientific developments to market as commercial products.
Translating research findings into practical applications and commercial products is one of the key drivers of an innovation-based economy. In this regard, the seminar provides a valuable practical platform for Uzbek researchers and startup teams to assess the market potential of their developments, protect their intellectual property effectively, and expand international partnerships.
About CLDP: Since 2022, the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce has been working with government institutions and local higher education institutions in Uzbekistan to advance technology transfer and intellectual property commercialization.
