For information: The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change is implementing Presidential Decree No. 5, "On measures to improve the waste management system and reduce its negative impact on the environmental situation". In particular, the Directorate for Landfill Management, under the Agency for Waste Management and the Development of a Circular Economy of the Ministry, reclaimed 29 of the 198 existing landfills in the republic in 2024.
The non-compliance of landfills with sanitary requirements and environmental standards leads to land pollution, destruction of biodiversity, increased fire hazards, and elevated greenhouse gas emissions. To address these issues, the "Strategy for Solid Household Waste Management in the Republic of Uzbekistan" has been developed. Under this strategy, it is planned to reclaim 167 landfills, encompassing a total area of 1,108.6 hectares.
It is worth noting that these measures have significantly reduced the leakage of greenhouse gases and minimized the risk of fires. The negative impact of wastewater on atmospheric air has also decreased by 78 percent.
Additionally, as part of the nationwide "Yashil Makon" project, 197,000 tree and shrub saplings were planted at 112 landfills across the republic. The creation of "green belts" has contributed to the restoration of soil quality and biodiversity.
The situation in landfills is steadily improving. Future plans include drastically reducing harmful gas emissions, minimizing the spread of diseases among the population, and establishing modern, environmentally compliant landfills.
