The State Reserve "Barsakelmes" was created in 2022 based on the recommendations of the Academies of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Its goal is to protect natural objects and complexes on the territory of the Ustyurt Plateau. This reserve occupies a vast territory of the Ustyurt plain, covering an area of 280,000 hectares, of which 44,000 hectares are designated as a protected zone.
Located in the Barsakelmes depression, the reserve is characterized by a flat relief with numerous karst forms such as sinkholes and depressions. The climate here is dry and sharply continental, with low precipitation and large temperature variations.
The flora and fauna of the reserve possess high biodiversity, including rare plant species such as saxaul, tamarisk, as well as a variety of animals such as saigas, goitered gazelles, wolves, and eagles.
Ecotourism is developing in the reserve, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the unique nature of this region, including karst sinkholes and depressions, Lake Gurkireuk, Barsakelmes salt mine, and historical sites.
The State Reserve "Barsakelmes" is located 260 km from the city of Nukus and 160 km from the Kungirat district.
