A training session entitled “A Clean City — Everyone’s Responsibility!” was held at Andijan State Institute of Foreign Languages.
The event was organised as part of the “Sustainable Solid Waste Management” project, implemented in cooperation with the National Association of Non-Governmental Non-Profit Organizations of Uzbekistan and the Agency for Waste Management and Development of the Circular Economy.
Participants included project organisers, environmental activists, representatives of non-governmental non-profit organisations, the institute’s academic staff and students.
During the session, it was noted that “Clean City” training activities are planned across 13 regions of Uzbekistan. The sessions focus on solid household waste management, separate waste collection, sorting, reuse and the promotion of circular economy principles.
Sherzodbek Valiev, Head of the Andijan Regional Branch of the National Association of NGOs of Uzbekistan, provided an overview of the project’s objectives, key activities and significance.
“The project primarily aims to raise public environmental awareness, promote responsible attitudes towards solid household waste, and strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical skills in effective waste management. Particular attention is also given to enhancing the role and participation of civil society institutions and the public in ensuring environmental sustainability,” Sherzodbek Valiev stated.
The programme also featured presentations by Foziljon Yunusov, Deputy Head of the Andijan Regional Department of the Agency for Waste Management and Development of the Circular Economy, and Shuhratbek Kamalov, Head of the Andijan Regional Research Centre.
The speakers emphasised that waste should not be viewed merely as material to be discarded, but as a valuable resource capable of generating economic value through recycling and reuse. They also highlighted the economic benefits of effective waste management and the practical application of circular economy principles.
A set of educational and informational materials entitled “Zero Waste” has been developed for primary and secondary school pupils and university students as part of the “Clean City” educational campaign. The materials are designed to expand young people’s environmental knowledge and encourage responsible attitudes towards solid household waste. The distribution of these materials to more than 10,000 general education schools across Uzbekistan is planned.
In addition, the project will feature activities under the “Youth Media Campaign”, which is expected to engage 10,000 young people. Interactive games, video clips, presentations and infographics will be used to strengthen environmental awareness and promote environmentally responsible behaviour among young people.
By promoting waste reduction, proper sorting and recycling, the project aims not only to protect the environment and maintain clean surroundings, but also to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.
