Hainan is a rapidly developing island province located in the southern part of China. Its population is 10.4 million people (ranked 28th in the country), and its territory covers 35.4 thousand km² (29th place). More than 2.9 million people live in its administrative center, Haikou city.
Geographically, Hainan is connected by land to Guangdong Province and maintains close regional relations via sea routes with countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, and Malaysia.
The region’s economic potential is also significant. Its gross regional product (GRP) amounts to 116.8 billion USD, ranking 28th in the country. The per capita GRP is about 11.5 thousand USD.
Key drivers of Hainan’s economy include non-ferrous metallurgy, machinery manufacturing, chemical, textile and food industries, electrical engineering, agriculture, and mining.
In particular, Hainan stands out among Chinese provinces as one of the regions with the highest share of agriculture and fisheries in its GRP structure, clearly demonstrating its strong agrarian and marine resource potential.
