On December 4–5, a meeting of the European Union’s Working Group on the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) was held in Brussels. The event brought together representatives from 28 EU member states and, for the first time, a delegation from the Republic of Uzbekistan, represented by the Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade (MIIT).
During the meeting, the Uzbek delegation presented the results achieved under the GSP+ framework since Uzbekistan obtained beneficiary status in 2021. It was noted that exports to the EU had nearly tripled during this period, reaching $1.15 billion. Stable export flows were established for over 1,100 product categories, including agricultural goods, textiles, electrical equipment, and chemical products, out of a total of 6,200 eligible items.
Recognizing Uzbekistan’s significant export potential, the delegation proposed expanding the list of goods covered by GSP+ to include fresh fruits and vegetables. They also recommended revising seasonal export quotas by extending the timeframe to ensure consistent supply and improve the competitiveness of Uzbek products in the EU market.
In addition, MIIT representatives called for the extension of the GSP+ preferential regime for another 10 years to consolidate the progress made and foster long-term economic ties with the European Union.
As part of their visit, the delegation held meetings with senior officials from the European Commission’s Departments of Trade and International Cooperation.
During these constructive discussions, topics such as revising import quotas for rolled metal products and attracting technical assistance from the EU to align Uzbek products with European standards were addressed.
Both parties agreed that the outcomes of the negotiations represent a significant step forward in strengthening trade and economic cooperation and advancing Uzbekistan’s interests under the GSP+ framework.
