About Uzatom agency

On May 24, 2024, in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan № DP-79 "On Measures to Improve the System of State Administration and Control in the Field of Underground Use, Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety and the Use of Nuclear Energy", the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers (Uzatom Agency) was established on the basis of the former Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy under the Ministry of Energy. The main areas of activity of the Uzatom Agency are defined by the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan № RP-188 dated May 24, 2024, “On Measures for the Effective Organization of the Activities of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers.” These directions encompass a wide range of tasks aimed at the safe and efficient use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes and the application of nuclear technologies across various sectors. Key areas of activity of the Uzatom Agency include: - Development and implementation of the national strategy, including development and safety assurance programs; - Coordination of the activities of all state bodies and organizations operating in the atomic energy sector; - Development and implementation of a regulatory and legal framework governing all aspects of nuclear energy use, from the design and construction of nuclear facilities to the management of radioactive waste; - Ensuring the physical protection of nuclear facilities and prevention of the proliferation of nuclear materials and technologies; - Advancement of scientific research and the introduction of innovative technologies; - Establishment and improvement of the radiation and nuclear safety system, including radiation monitoring and emergency response; - Training and retraining of highly qualified personnel; - Active international cooperation and fulfillment of international obligations. In particular, the Uzatom Agency exercises strict control over all stages of the life cycle of nuclear materials, spent nuclear fuel, and radioactive waste. It identifies leading organizations, ensures fire safety at subordinate facilities, and participates in the development and implementation of both internal and external emergency response plans. The Uzatom Agency is a republican executive authority responsible for implementing state policy in the field of atomic energy use. It operates based on the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan №709 dated October 28, 2024, “On the Organization of the Activities of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan.” In its activities, the Uzatom Agency is guided by the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Uzbekistan, resolutions of the Chambers of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, decrees, resolutions, and orders of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as resolutions and orders of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Regulation on the Uzatom Agency.
