On November 22, the first meeting of the Public Council was held at the Agency for Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Representatives of civil society institutions, leading experts in the fields of nuclear power, nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear medicine, and ecology, as well as the Agency’s leadership and specialists, took part in the meeting.
Participants reviewed and approved the Public Council’s rules of procedure, determined key areas of activity, mechanisms for engagement with the public, and priority tasks for 2026 and the subsequent period.
The discussions focused on ensuring maximum transparency and openness in the implementation of national peaceful-use nuclear energy projects, including the construction of a nuclear power plant, the development of nuclear medicine infrastructure, the training of highly qualified personnel, strengthening the nuclear and radiation safety system in full compliance with the requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and harmonizing national legislation with international standards.
The Public Council was formed in line with objectives to further develop civil society institutions and improve public oversight of state bodies’ activities. Its work is aimed at creating an effective platform for constructive dialogue between the state, the expert community, and citizens on all aspects of the development of Uzbekistan’s nuclear sector, ensuring the public acceptability of projects and taking into account the population’s views.
Following the meeting, decisions were made to hold regular meetings, organize public hearings, monitor project implementation, and systematically inform citizens through the Agency’s official channels and mass media.
The Uzatom Agency will continue its work to strengthen openness and public participation in the development of nuclear technologies as a strategic direction for ensuring energy security, sustainable economic growth, and improving the quality of life of the population of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
