On this day in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, primarily as habitats for waterfowl, was signed in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
Five sites in Uzbekistan are included in the list of Ramsar wetlands of international importance: Lake Dengizkul (2001), the Arnasay lake system (2008), the Tudakul and Kuymazar reservoirs (2020), Lake Sudochye (2023) and Lake Julturbas (2024).
Wetlands are of exceptional importance to both humans and nature. They play a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of floods and droughts. Although they cover only about six percent of the Earth's land surface, they are home to approximately 40% of all plant and animal species. Therefore, wetlands are essential for people, ecosystems and the climate, as they contribute to water resource regulation.
