The event was attended by representatives of government organizations, NGOs, the private sector, academia and research institutes, and international experts in the field of pesticide and hazardous waste management.
"The primary objective of this workshop is to introduce the concept of pesticide life cycle management, assess gaps in Uzbekistan’s current pesticide management system, and develop a roadmap of actions to address these gaps in the short, medium, and long term. This will ultimately help mitigate the risks posed by obsolete pesticides and implement best practices to safeguard human health and the environment", said Elmurod Nazarov, the project’s national coordinator.
The project on Safe Pesticide Management, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the Ministry of Ecology, Environment, and Climate Change with the support of the European Union, aims to support the country in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change and reducing environmental degradation.
During the seminar, it was noted that the implementation of the project is an important step towards improving environmental safety in Uzbekistan. In order to minimize environmental and human health impacts during the production, distribution, and use of pesticides, FAO and WHO have developed a pesticide lifecycle management concept that integrates best practices at every stage of pesticide management from production to disposal.
