Uzbekistan strengthens ecological diplomacy on the sidelines of the CICA Ministerial Conference

Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change Jusipbek Kazbekov took part in the Ministerial Conference of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia (CICA), chaired by the Republic of Kazakhstan, in an online format. The event was attended by ministers and heads of environmental agencies of the CICA member states, which includes 28 countries.

At the opening of the conference, Chairman of the CICA, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nyssanbayev, spoke, calling for further discussion on the institutionalization of cooperation between member states on environmental issues through the creation of the CICA Environmental Council.

The main focus of the conference was on defining the priorities of the CICA member states on environmental issues, promoting goals for environmental sustainability, sharing best practices in mitigating and adapting to climate change, as well as identifying ways to solve environmental problems in the CICA region. 

In his speech, J. Kazbekov noted the large-scale work carried out by the government of the country under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the field of environmental protection, as well as Uzbekistan's desire to strengthen environmental diplomacy aimed at achieving global environmental goals and ensuring the equitable distribution of natural resources and responsibility for their conservation.
"Uzbekistan is determined to actively participate in overcoming environmental and climatic consequences and consistently advocates strengthening regional cooperation and implementing joint projects", said the Deputy Minister.

The conference participants discussed issues related to environmental pollution, climate change, a green and sustainable economy, biodiversity conservation, and water resources.

Following the conference, delegates adopted a high-level statement reflecting the commitment of the 28 CICA member states to developing cooperation, sharing best practices, and addressing critical environmental issues. According to the document, the CICA member states pledged to ensure more rational use of water resources through capacity-building and technology exchange, combat climate change by the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, and improve the quality of life, paying special attention to mitigating the effects of climate change, preserving biodiversity, and combating environmental pollution.
