By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated November 23, 2023, "On Measures to Ensure Environmental Sustainability by Further Increasing the Level of Landscaping in the Republic and Consistently Implementing the National Project "Green Space," the National Program for the Sustainable Development of the Aral Sea Region and the Wide Introduction of Innovations and "Green" Technologies for 2024-2028 was approved.
The creation of "green belts" in the Aral Sea region will ensure environmental sustainability and reduce the impact of urban agglomerations on the environment.
The joint project of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility "Preservation and Management of Lakes, Wetlands and Coastal Areas of the Aral Sea Basin as the Basis for Supporting a Sustainable and Degrading Lifestyle of the Aral Sea Basin Landscape" (Aral Sea Wetlands) also makes a worthy contribution to the implementation of the landscaping initiative of the national project "Green Space." The main goal of the project is to improve the sustainability of ecosystems and habitats in the Aral Sea basin by preventing the degradation of protected natural areas and lands. Despite the tragic drying up of the Aral Sea, its basin still contains important lakes, swamps, and coastal ecosystems. The Aral Sea region is located on a very important migration route for dozens of migratory bird species.
