The Senate of the Oliy Majlis approved the Law "On Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan 'On the Introduction of the Uzbek Alphabet Based on the Latin Script'". This document introduces new letters with diacritical marks to replace apostrophe-based and two-letter combinations that caused practical difficulties. The Legislative Chamber passed this law on July 7.
According to the amendments, the letter O‘ o‘ is replaced by Ö ö, G‘ g‘ by Ğ ğ, the letter combination Sh sh by Ş ş, and Ch ch by Ç ç. Additionally, the letter combination Ng is removed from the alphabet as an independent letter, while the apostrophe (‘) is retained. These changes aim to enhance convenience when using standard keyboards and typing texts.
An important aspect for citizens and organizations is that all documents issued in the current alphabet prior to the law's entry into force, as well as the national currency and securities, remain fully valid and in unrestricted circulation. The use of symbols, signboards, and indicators of state bodies and organizations is permitted until they become unusable or until a specified deadline.
The legal and administrative interests of the public are fully protected, eliminating mandatory document replacement requirements or unnecessary delays. The implementation of these changes will proceed gradually and systematically.
This reform serves to eliminate technical and orthographic challenges in the Uzbek script and facilitates adaptation to digital technologies. The simplification of spelling rules will increase the efficiency of official administration and significantly reduce errors in document circulation.
