On 30 October in Samarkand, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented a set of major initiatives aimed at deepening Uzbekistan’s collaboration with UNESCO during the opening of the 43rd General Conference. For the first time in 40 years, the session is being held outside UNESCO’s Paris headquarters.

In his address, the President emphasised Uzbekistan’s role as a historical crossroads of civilisations and called for stronger peacebuilding, cultural understanding and international cooperation.
Among the flagship proposals are integrating artificial intelligence into education, promoting inclusive learning for children with special needs, safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, advancing gender equality and boosting media literacy.
The 2025 Samarkand session will include over 150 events covering education, culture, innovation and sustainability, with representatives from around 193 countries expected to attend.
Uzbekistan’s hosting reflects its evolving role in global cultural diplomacy and its commitment to UNESCO’s mission since joining in 1993.
President Mirziyoyev said Uzbekistan is ready to act as a bridge between East and West and to host international forums on education, heritage conservation and climate resilience.
“The spirit of Samarkand, fuelled by UNESCO values, beckons us to unite and progress together,” he said.
