The event annually brings together world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organizations and civil society to discuss priority measures to combat climate change. COP30 this year focuses on the efforts required to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, the presentation of new national action plans and progress in fulfilling the financial commitments made at COP29.
On 12 November, the Uzbek delegation presented its updated nationally determined contributions (NDC 3.0).
For reference: a nationally determined contribution (NDC) is a plan of actions for reducing emissions and adapting to climate change. Under the Paris Agreement, each Party is required to update its NDC every five years. The third NDC includes information on the country’s national greenhouse gas emissions and removals, reports on progress made toward the targets set in NDC 2 and establishes new targets. Reporting on and review of these targets are central components of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF), which in turn is the foundation of the Paris Agreement.
This year the Republic of Uzbekistan updated its NDC by increasing the targeted reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity (per unit of GDP) from 35% by 2030 to 50% by 2035, relative to 2010 levels. The NDC update, which raises the emissions-intensity reduction target to 50% by 2035 (compared with 2010), reflects the country’s actions, expands access to finance for the green transition, strengthens international cooperation, and ensures closer engagement with the global community through transparent accounting rules, harmonized sectoral plans and portfolio project planning.
It was particularly noted at the event that the new NDC 3.0 report was developed with active participation from the youth of the Republic of Uzbekistan and incorporates principles that account for children’s rights and the meaningful role of young people in the climate agenda.
