Respect for the Mother Tongue Is Respect for the Nation
October 21 marks the day the Uzbek language was granted the status of the state language. This date is one of the significant milestones reflecting the national identity, spirituality, and rich historical heritage of our people. Celebrated widely throughout the country every year, this holiday helps strengthen love and respect for our mother tongue, reinforce its role and prestige in society, and foster respect for our national values among the younger generation.
On this occasion, a spiritual and educational celebration was organized at the Bukhara District House of Culture under the slogan “Long Live the Dignity of My Mother Tongue!” During the event, special attention was devoted to the invaluable richness of our mother tongue, its unparalleled role in the lives of our people, further enhancing the prestige and status of the Uzbek language, preserving its purity, and promoting respect for our native language.
The Uzbek language is a spiritual treasure shaped over centuries and a symbol of our national identity and pride. Through language, people express their thoughts, share their innermost feelings with others, and pass on to future generations the customs, traditions, and values inherited from their ancestors. Therefore, cherishing, respecting, and developing one’s mother tongue is an important spiritual responsibility for every individual.
Looking back at history, October 21, 1989, was a landmark day in the life of our people, when the Uzbek language was granted the status of the state language. This historic decision laid an important foundation for strengthening the position of our national language in social and political life and expanding its use in the affairs of the state and society. Today, efforts continue to strengthen the status of Uzbek as the state language, showcase its full potential, and enhance its international standing.
The Uzbek language stands out for its rich vocabulary, expressive qualities, melodious sound, and unique charm. Through their works, great thinkers such as Alisher Navoi demonstrated just how rich and versatile our mother tongue is. Navoi’s literary legacy has played an invaluable role in the formation and development of Uzbek as a literary language. Today, too, examples of classical literature, oral folk traditions, proverbs, and sayings continue to reveal the richness of our language and the depth of our people’s wisdom.
During the event, alongside efforts to enhance the prestige and status of the Uzbek language, special emphasis was placed on preserving its purity. After all, linguistic purity is one of the important indicators of national culture and spirituality. Observing the standards of literary language in everyday communication, official documents, mass media, and social networks, using words appropriately, and following spelling rules are practical expressions of respect for our mother tongue.
In today’s era of globalization, learning foreign languages is highly important. At the same time, every individual needs to know their mother tongue well, appreciate its value, and use it correctly. Learning other languages broadens one’s horizons, while cherishing one’s mother tongue strengthens national identity and spiritual roots. For this reason, nurturing a love for the mother tongue among the younger generation and developing fluent, articulate, and grammatically correct speech remain pressing priorities.
Cultural institutions have an important responsibility to promote our mother tongue, preserve national values, and enrich the spiritual world of our people through literature and the arts. Such spiritual and educational events help increase public appreciation of the language, strengthen feelings of national pride, and promote the development of speech culture throughout society.
Preserving and cherishing our mother tongue should not be limited to holidays; it must be reflected in our everyday lives, in every word we speak and every action we take. Teaching our children to speak their mother tongue beautifully and fluently, encouraging their interest in reading, and promoting classical and contemporary literature will help build a strong foundation for the future of our language. After all, the vitality and development of a language depend above all on the care, responsibility, and affection of the people who use it.
The celebration held at the Bukhara District House of Culture once again reminded everyone of the importance of strengthening respect for our mother tongue, recognizing its immeasurable value, and protecting it as the apple of our eye. Events of this kind enrich the spiritual life of our people, promote our national values, and inspire everyone to make a meaningful contribution to the development of our mother tongue.
The mother tongue is the heart of a nation, the mirror of its history, and the firm foundation of its future. Loving, cherishing, developing, and passing it on to future generations in its finest form is an honorable duty for us all.
Long live the dignity of my mother tongue! Let my beautiful and unique Uzbek language ring out proudly! As long as you live, our national identity, spirituality, and values will endure!
